On my way home from work, I come along many homeless people every day. I often give some money or food for their dogs. Sometimes, on hot summer days, I bring a cold drink. And in the weeks before Christmas, I prepare little bags with homemade cookies and other Christmas sweets. (The bags of dog owners contain of course a little dog treat, too). It is so touching, but also sad, how these people react! The short eye contact, the smile.... it's a small gesture, but it makes a difference when you give a nicely decorated present instead of some coins. Though I'm always sad when I think about my family and how we enjoy this kind of sweets whilst they are out in the cold.
