This may not be as heroic as the stories I've read but my act of kindness was helping a woman in front of me at the checkout line in Walmart. I saw her ask her son to wait by the cart and she tried to calm him down while she asked the cashier for cash back so she could get a cab. Her son was autistic and I think that would make life even more challenging than it already is for most of us. I offered her a ride. I can't believe someone was so grateful for such a small gesture. She said she was praying to her mom who had passed away to send her an angel and me offering her a ride made her feel like those prayers were being answered. My mom had also recently passed away leaving me with a very empty pointless feeling in life, doing that small favour for her was a deeply rewarding experience.
