My seven-year-old son and I took a "listening" walk in our neighborhood. "Did you hear that bird?" I would ask, and he and I would stop, make eye contact, and take in the sounds together. More birds, breeze, dogs barking, clatter of squirrel claws against tree bark. The second time he heard that he insisted they were raccoons not squirrels, but I suppose that was the point: imagining and creating stories around the sounds. A great time.
