A time when someone was kind to me. I was trying to fly home after a semester and some travel in Germany. More or less out of money and without a flight reservation (the decisions we make when we are young!), I spent the night on a bench in the Frankfurt airport, and waited to see if there was an open seat available on a plane home. As more people came in for the morning flights, an old woman sat next to me, waiting for her flight to visit relatives in the US. As we talked, she gave me some food she had packed. Grapes and bread. I was hungry and they were delicious. "Studenten brauchen Fruhstuck," she said to me. Students need breakfast. I got an open seat on the plane. Almost thirty years later, I am still grateful for that breakfast from an old woman in a Frankfurt airport.
